How to Clean Pool Deck Drains

How to Clean Pool Deck Drains

Good drainage is essential to maintaining a safe pool deck area. The water being splashed out of the pool and falling off swimsuits can gather on the deck, making the concrete or other surface material slippery and increasing the risk of falls and serious injury. Learning how to clean pool deck drains can keep them in good working order and can keep your pool area safe for all.

What are Pool Deck Drains? Pool Deck Drain

A pool drain is a small channel that is embedded into the pool decking material. It captures water that gathers on the pool deck and it carries it away to a hidden drain. The surface drain is usually a narrow channel that runs along the perimeter of the pool, but it can be designed to the necessary shape and configuration that best suits your pool deck.

How to Clean Your Pool Deck Drain

Keeping your pool deck drain clean will ensure that it keeps working effectively. Here’s how you can clean pool deck drains without the help of a professional:

Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools and Materials

You may need a screwdriver to remove the top of the drain. Others will pull right up. You will need gloves to protect your hands while you work, and you will need a trash can and a sump pump.

Step 2: Prepare the Area

You will need to position the sump pump in an area below the drain. Set up the sump pump, and direct the outtake hose in the direction you want to drain the water. Push the trash can near you.

Step 3: Remove Debris from the Pool Deck Drain

With your gloved hand, remove any leaves, sticks, or other debris that is inside the drain and put it in the trashcan next to you. Once all debris is removed and your pool deck drain is clean, turn on the sump pump and clear out any water that may remain.

Step 4: Inspect and Reassemble the Drain

Before reassembling the drain cover, inspect the drain to make sure that no debris is clogging any of the elements. Look deep and look close. Once everything is clear, put the drain cover back on and reattach any screws.

Regular Deck Drain Maintenance Tips

You can keep your pool deck drain from clogging by regularly removing any surface debris, including stray leaves, pine needles, and more. Trim back tree branches and brush that can direct leaves and other plant matter toward your drain. Finally, be sure to wash the surface of the drain regularly to prevent the build up of slime or other matter.
