During warmer months, your fish pond can provides hours of relaxations as you watch your little fish dart back and forth. If you want your little friends to make it through the winter months, you need to prepare. Here are some helpful tips from ePonds.com to help you get started.

Hopefully you have prepared your fish for the winter by feeding them a high-protein diet all summer longer. As the water temperatures start to dip into the low 60’s their metabolisms will begin to slow. Cut down their feedings during this time, and completely stop when the temperatures remain lower than 50 degrees.

All the organic materials that has collected during the summer will break down over the winter by consuming oxygen and releasing a toxic gas. Take special precautions to keep at least one area free from ice, so the gases can escape. Special thermostat controlled heating units can help achieve this.

Many recommend shutting off your pump and storing it away around mid-December to keep it from freezing during the colder times.

These have just been a few tips to help you keep your scaly friends health through the winter. If you are interested in your own fish pond, or water feature, call Triad Associates.
