- Consider outdoor foliage and how it will affect your maintenance. A patio can be ideal for spending time outdoors, but placing one near large trees that will continuously drop leaves on your space will make maintenance a long-term project .
- Cover at least part of your patio with something substantial. This is especially important if you regularly get light rain or very hot sun in your area. Having at least part of your patio covered with a hard surface can allow you to spend more time outdoors.
