Discover the benefits of installing exposed aggregate.

One of the most overlooked construction materials around is exposed aggregate concrete, even though it has been used as an exterior decorative element for well over a century. Durable, versatile and affordable, this natural material can be crafted to mimic a variety of stone finishes including granite and marble, as well as into a unique look of its own.

What Exactly is Exposed Aggregate Concrete?

For the most part, ordinary concrete is composed of two materials, cement and aggregate. The cement when mixed with water forms a bonding agent that keeps everything together after the water dries up. In most concrete applications, a thin layer of cement is allowed to rise to the exterior surface and is then smoothed to give the typical “concrete” look.

Exposed aggregate takes a different tack. Instead, most of the outer concrete is removed to expose the aggregate underneath. The aggregate can be finished to a rough surface that is ideal for patios and driveways or it can be finished to a more even surface that makes an excellent, non-slip, surface for walkways and around pools. In every case, the natural beauty of the stone aggregate is highlighted.
