Areas to Use Permeable Pavers

You can use permeable pavers just about anywhere that you can use other hardscaping materials, such as poured concrete, asphalt, and natural stone. The installation process is different, but the outcome is the same: A beautiful, hardscape surface that will last for many years with the right care.

Design Options for Permeable Pavers

One of the top reasons that permeable pavers are such a great choice for your hardscaping is that they come in a wide variety of looks, allowing you great flexibility in your design. Pavers come in a variety of materials, and they come in different colors, sizes, thicknesses, textures, shapes, and more. Your choice of even one stone has a big impact on the final look of your space. However, you can also choose many different stones to mix and match for a unique look.

Using different pavers is a popular option when designing a hardscape. One popular option is to use a different paver as a border, such as a line of bricks around a patio of flagstone. You can play around with different combinations to create some interesting looks. Another option we’ve seen a lot of people incorporate is to use angular pavers, like rectangular pavers, in a grid-like design, surrounded by small, round pavers. Using contrasting shapes, colors, or textures can create an interesting design that will set your property apart.

Pavers can also be laid in different designs, creating swirls, circles, and more just with their placement.

Our hardscaping designers will help you explore the options for your space, helping you to see how different design options can create different results for your space. We use sketches, 3D design software, and stone samples to help you visualize the different designs in your space. You’ll be able to see how making even minor tweaks, like using a different shade of a particular stone, can make big changes for your final project. A series of minor tweaks can strengthen your design so that you get phenomenal results that will elevate the look of your property. You’ll love spending time in your new space, and you’ll love showing it off to your friends and family.

Benefits of Using Permeable Pavers

Besides the beautiful look that pavers offer, there are a lot of great benefits to using permeable pavers. One of the top reasons that many people choose permeable pavers is that they are more environmentally friendly than many other materials for hardscaping.

Permeable pavers get their name from their ability to let water pass through them into the ground. The pavers themselves are not porous, and the water does not pass through the stone. However, the pavers are placed next to each other, with a small space between that is filled with sand or fine aggregate. The water is able to slip into the space and to the ground below the stone. In contrast, a concrete slab is a completely impermeable surface, and the water keeps running down and building up until it hits ground. By that point, a lot of water may have built up, creating problems for the surrounding landscape.

Permeable pavers help to control runoff, preventing erosion and other problems for the land and surrounding water supplies. By using permeable pavers, you may be able to avoid the need for drainage measures, such as French drains, swales, drainage pipes, and more. You’ll save money and protect your land at the same time.

Another major benefit of permeable pavers is that they are easy to repair. When concrete becomes cracked or broken, you have to use power tools to break up sections of the concrete and then re-pour the area. When you have a broken paver, you simply take it out and put in a new one. The process is simple and inexpensive. Even replacing an entire paver area is easier than tearing out and replacing a concrete area.

Finally, permeable pavers can be a safer option than some other hardscaping materials, and they can be easier to maintain. Safety and maintenance depends entirely on what type of stone you choose for your pavers. You need stones that have good grip and that can withstand temperature extremes and other components that contribute to damage. The hardscaping experts at Triad Associates can help you choose the right stones for enhanced safety and reduced maintenance. Safety is a big concern when you are choosing stones that will be around pool areas or in walkways. We’ll help you make the right choice to create a safe area while also achieving a beautiful design.

Proper Installation is Key to Success with Permeable Pavers

There are many steps involved in the installation of permeable pavers, and the proper execution of each is critical to the longevity of the pavers.

To start, the land needs to be graded for proper leveling and stability of the pavers. Otherwise, the pavers will shift with time, and the whole process will need to be redone. Once the grading and leveling is complete, a layer of gravel or other crushed stone will be laid. How deep this layer is depends on the properties of the soil and how much rainfall or flooding is expected in the area. Typically, the stone will be up to 12 inches deep. If the area is known to get especially heavy rainfall, or if the soil does not have good drainage, additional drainage measures may be put in place under the stone, such as a drainage pipe.

Once this bed of stone is laid and leveled, a layer of sand may be placed on top, or the pavers may be placed directly. The pavers are placed in the design that you choose, and sand or fine aggregate is brushed into the space between the pavers, filling it completely. Concrete curbs or another material is placed outside the pavers to keep them in place.

Additional steps may be needed, depending on the qualities of your particular property, but this is the basic process for installing permeable pavers. If any step is performed incorrectly, the pavers will fail, costing you a lot of money and potentially causing problems for your land. That’s why it is so important to hire trusted professionals like those at Triad Associates to perform this work. With Triad, you’ll get long-lasting and high-quality results for your hardscape.
