Good patio design is important for many reasons; it marries the exterior of your home to the home itself, and it determines how the patio space functions and feels for you and your guests. Read on for some tips on good patio design.
First of all, it helps to understand the different kinds of patio structures available. A pergola is a freestanding outdoor structure with an open roof that’s supported by columns or posts. It works as a cover for a patio or a walkway, and, with a fabric canopy attached, can shade outdoor living areas. The open floor (and ceiling) plan of a pergola make it a good candidate for environments that get lots of sun and a good breeze, and they’re a very affordable patio design, since they don’t use as many materials as other structures. A patio cover is slightly different; it’s not freestanding, but attached to another structure, like the house, and extends over the patio area. This can be an open or covered fixture.
Finally, the gazebo; this is another freestanding structure, and for centuries has been providing shade for people. Traditionally, gazebos have pitched roofs and openings on all sides, for an obstructed view. They’re not as big as pergolas or patio covers, but they are a little more intimate, and can be tailored to fit a lot of outdoor design themes. They can be elevated higher than other designs.
